Where does Your Traffic Come From? |
|
There are basically two ways a potential customer will ever reach your website.
One way is when the customer directly types the address
into their address bar on their browser. This will only happen when the
customer is already aware of your websites existence such as when you have the
website address printed on company literature - business cards, mailers, etc..
The other way a customer can reach your site is when they
click on it in the results delivered by a search engine.
|
|
What Optimization Does |
|
You can literally advertise on your website that you give away gold and diamonds
and if the site's not Search Engine Optimized, your treasure will be relatively
safe. Having a website that can only be reached by typing
in the direct address in the browser address bar is
like having a listing in the business pages of the local phone book. When
your site is Search Engine Optimized and it shows up in the
top results of a search, well that's like having a
full page yellow pages add in the global phone book. |
|
Optimizing the Site |
|
The site can be optimized with the content as is, however, for maximum
effectiveness the content/text of the site may need to be revised reflecting the
specific issues you want to target, such as products, services, etc.. Once these
issues are listed in the body/content, the meta tags in the code (title,
description, etc.) can be revised and keywords and keyphrases which are relevant
to the body content (which now reflects our target issues) can be selected.
Having keywords or keyphrases in your keyword meta tag without having them in
the body/content actually counts against you.
Now the next time the search engine robots "crawl" this site, it will index the site with the new content and the correct and relevant meta tags and in time the site will be competitive with other rival sites in your industry targeting the same keywords and keyphrases. |
|
Optional Optimization Tactics |
|
"Jump-Start" the process with Manual Submittals |
| Once the site has been optimized, if you don't want to wait on the "crawling robots" (think about their name) the indexing process may be "jump-started" by manually submitting the site to the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.). |
|
Get an "Extra Edge" with Link Popularity |
| Building the site's "Link Popularity" can, and almost always will, give your site an extra edge when competing with rival sites in your industry to outrank them in the search engine results. This can be achieved in various ways such as exchanging links with non-competing sites, industry associations, etc., and posting your link on other sites. |
|
"Go the Extra Mile" with a Marketing/Promotion Campaign |
| A comprehensive and progressive Marketing/Promotion Campaign can be a huge benefit in the performance of your website. Not only do you stand a chance of receiving jobs directly from the ads, it will also aid in building link popularity and give your business exposure in venues other than the search engines and direct addresses (web address on business cards, mailers, service stickers, etc.). This step is an ongoing process, at least for a short period of time (2 - 4 months) after the initial optimization. While the other operations are prerequisites to this campaign, it may turn out to be one of the most productive portions of the initial investment package, since the possible jobs and link popularity will help speed up your Return On Investment. After all, that's our goal here, invest some money now and get your site to perform and bring in clients/ jobs/revenue, and in turn pay for itself, over and over again. |
